  1. Hello, Ben

congratulations for taking the exams! My name is Alina, I am from Romania and I would like to take the 70-536 exam asap. Unfortunately, no resources are available yet, books for instance. What would be you advice: for a programmer with few month experience in C# 2.0, studying the msdn and it’s examples are enaugh for getting the certificate? Did yo use a guide or did you had a book?

    Thanks a lot!

  2. Hi Alina thanks for the comment.

I do understand about the lack of resources! There are a few more available than there used to be, but still not great.

Personally, what I recommend is getting a good C# book (Practical C# and the .net 2.0 framework is a good one, I used Pro C# 2005 and the .net 2.0 platform) to provide you a good foundation for C# which you should read cover-to-cover.

Based on what you read in the book you should develop some sample applications to exploit the technology (even if they aren’t used, don’t have to be useable, just to get used to the way it works and the pitfalls). I didn’t really know how to control windows services from C#, so I created a quick Service Controller (like MMC) just to get used to the classes and objects and how they interact. Wish I had done this for interop and security but never got the chance.

Compare what you know from the book to what Microsoft has published on the exam, and everything which is missing –read MSDN, blog posts, Google etc….

Next, maybe look at a course prep guide (Microsoft have released theirs). I haven’t found them to be great by themselves, but excellent as an additional resource.

Finally, before the exam take the measure up exam prep sample questions. Pay the money, do all 150 questions, read everything you get right and wrong (focus on the explanations, as you pickup a lot).

Then if you feel your ready, take the exam.

I wish you good luck. If you want to email me about any more questions, feel free.

    Regards

    Ben

  3. congrats ben,

iam hari from india,I would like to take the 70-536 exam.

i want to know from you that is there any video tutorials for to take 70-536 exam or suggest me for the books or topics related to that, bcos for me it is very less time to go.

  4. Congrats on passing your cert. exams. I am just about to start studying for mine.

Is there any particular reason why you chose Web Applications over Window Applications or Distributed Application? I’m still torn between which I want to do. I am leaning towards Windows Applications.

  5. Thanks,

Reason I went for Web was because work offered to pay for a QA training course on ASP.net and because I was doing more web work at the time.

Now, i’m doing more windows stuff so need to get up to speed on that side of life.

Both exams are outdated a bit (ajax + wpf since) but both hold good core topics.

Best to do the exam based on what you have most experience in or enjoy most and think you will get the most use out of. I think Distributed is quite hard – or at least it looks like as thats the area I have least experience in.

  6. congrats ben,

  7. hi Raju

Like I have mentioned in my previous comments, the best preparation is to code. To pass you actually need to have wrote at least sample code/applications to fully understand the implementation.

Make sure you know all the topics MSDN articles and documentation and all the documentation. Also, post blogs are a great resource.

    Hope this helps, good luck.

    Ben
